Tip 7: Don’t Forget This Small Brushcutter Maintenance Job

The gearbox at the cutting head of your brushcutter works under constant load and needs proper lubrication. In OVDV Tip 7, I show you how to check the gearbox grease and add a small amount when needed to help reduce wear and prevent avoidable repairs. Watch the video to see the maintenance step in practice.
The gearbox at the cutting head of your brushcutter is constantly working under load. Without enough lubrication, the internal gears are exposed to unnecessary friction and wear.
In OVDV Tip 7, I show you one small maintenance point that is easy to forget: checking the grease inside the brushcutter gearbox and adding a small amount when necessary.
It only takes a few minutes, but it is exactly the kind of preventative maintenance that can help avoid unnecessary wear and more expensive repairs later.
Why does the brushcutter gearbox need grease?
The gearbox transfers the power from the drive shaft to the cutting attachment.
Inside the gearbox, metal components move continuously against each other while the machine is running. Gearbox grease provides lubrication and helps reduce friction between these moving parts.
Over time, the amount and condition of the grease should therefore be checked as part of normal machine maintenance.
Step 1: Make the machine safe
Before working around the cutting head, switch the brushcutter off completely.
Make sure the cutting attachment cannot start accidentally and allow the gearbox to cool down if the machine has just been used.
Always work on the machine when it is stable and switched off.
Step 2: Locate the gearbox grease point
In Tip 7, I show you the small screw on the gearbox housing near the cutting head.
Behind this screw is the access point used to check and add gearbox grease.
The exact location and construction can differ between machines, so check the manual for your specific brushcutter if you are unsure.
Step 3: Remove the screw
Carefully remove the screw from the gearbox housing.
There is no need to dismantle the complete cutting head or gearbox. The grease point is specifically designed so that this maintenance can be carried out without opening the entire gearbox.
Keep the screw somewhere clean while you work so that no dirt enters the opening.
Step 4: Check the grease
Before simply adding more grease, check the condition inside the gearbox.
The important point is that the gearbox should remain properly lubricated — but that does not mean filling the complete housing with grease.
If there is still sufficient grease present, additional grease may not be necessary.
Step 5: Add a small amount when needed
I demonstrate how a small amount of gearbox grease is added through the opening.
Use grease intended for the gearbox of your brushcutter and avoid adding excessive amounts.
The goal is to maintain lubrication of the internal gears, not to completely fill the gearbox.
Always follow the recommendations for your specific machine when choosing the lubricant and quantity.
Step 6: Close the gearbox again
Once the grease has been checked or added, reinstall the screw securely.
Before using the machine again, make sure:
- the screw is correctly installed
- no grease is leaking from the opening
- no tools or loose parts remain near the cutting head
- the cutting attachment is correctly fitted
The brushcutter is then ready for use again.
Why is this maintenance point easy to forget?
Unlike trimmer line, blades or other visible wear parts, the grease inside the gearbox is hidden.
The brushcutter can continue working normally even when this maintenance point has not been checked for some time. That makes it easy to overlook.
But regular preventative maintenance is usually much simpler and cheaper than repairing a gearbox after excessive wear has already occurred.
OVDV Tip 7: small maintenance can prevent bigger problems
My key tip is simple: do not wait until the gearbox starts making unusual noises before thinking about lubrication.
Checking the gearbox grease takes only a few minutes and can easily become part of your normal brushcutter maintenance routine.
A small check today can help prevent unnecessary wear later.
