TIP 8: How to Grease a Hedge Trimmer Gearbox

3 min read

Your hedge trimmer may still be working perfectly, but what`s happening inside the gearbox that drives the blades?? And more importantly, what can you do yourself to prevent costly repairs or premature damage?

A hedge trimmer does a lot of mechanical work every time you use it. Inside the gearbox, several moving parts transfer the power from the engine to the cutting blades.

Because these components are constantly moving under load, lubrication is an important part of keeping the mechanism working smoothly.

In OVDV Tip 8, I open the gearbox of a hedge trimmer and show you what is actually happening inside — and why the grease in this area should not be forgotten during maintenance.

Why does the gearbox need grease?

The grease inside the gearbox forms a lubricating layer around the moving components. In the video, you can clearly see the grease around the gears and the drive mechanism once the housing is opened.

Proper lubrication helps the gearbox to:

  • reduce friction between moving parts,
  • limit unnecessary wear,
  • keep the drive mechanism moving smoothly,
  • protect the internal components during operation.

Use the correct gearbox grease

For this type of maintenance, use gearbox grease that is suitable for the machine you are working on.

In the video, I also show the grease used during this maintenance step. The exact grease specification can differ between machines, so always check the instructions for your hedge trimmer before adding lubricant.

You do not always need to open the complete gearbox

I open the gearbox in the video mainly so you can see what is happening inside.

Depending on the hedge trimmer, normal lubrication may be carried out through a dedicated lubrication point or screw on the gearbox. That means you may be able to add grease without dismantling the complete gearbox.

Always follow the maintenance procedure specified for your machine.

Do not simply fill the gearbox completely

More grease is not automatically better. The goal is to provide the correct lubrication for the moving components, not simply to pack the gearbox completely full.

The required quantity and maintenance interval can differ between models, so use the manufacturer’s instructions as your reference.

A small maintenance point that is easy to forget

Gearbox lubrication is easy to overlook because you normally cannot see what is happening inside the machine.

But every time the hedge trimmer is running, the gears and drive mechanism are working continuously. Checking the lubrication as part of regular maintenance can help reduce unnecessary wear and keep the mechanism working as intended.

Watch the video above to see the gearbox opened up and the lubrication point in practice.
